Introduction and History

Image 1: Quebec City in 1756

In 1608 French explorer Samuel De Champlain founded Quebec City. This was one of the many new colonies located along the Saint Lawrence River. Other famous cities on the Saint Lawrence River includes Montreal and Kingston. The land was originally inhabited by Iroquois Natives, which later became some of the chief trading partners of the French. Quebec’s location along the Saint Lawrence gave it a huge advantage for trade. Champlain quickly built trading posts such as L’Habtation, many of which remain intact to this day.

Quebec became the principal city of New France and became a major trading port in the world. In this website I argue how trade and religion were connected to Quebec City and how the cultural aspects of New France played a major role in the Americas and the world.
