Quebec and the American Revolution

Image 8: The Battle of Quebec 1775

In 1775 while the Seige of Boston was still occurring the colonial army sent troops up to Canada. They figured the Canadians would not have the will to fight for the British, and would just surrender quickly. They also figured this would be a major defeat for the British. Due to the cold weather however, nearly half of the men who marched up to Canada died on the journey. When the Americans got to Quebec the British were ready for them and ended up killing many of their men and General Montgomery.

Most French Canadians at the time did not join the Americans in battle. Instead a few volunteers ended up working for the British. Had the British not have authorized the Quebec act it seems far more likely that the French Canadians would have joined the Americans in fighting against the British. This was the first major defeat for the Americans during the Revolutionary war.
